Authentic Relating: Unintentional Gaslighting — and What to Say Instead
Gaslighting doesn’t always come from a place of malice — sometimes it happens without us even realizing it. Yet even when unintentional, it can still create confusion, disconnection, and emotional harm.
Imagine telling a partner that the store was out of their favorite cereal when, in truth, we simply forgot to look and didn’t want to admit it. In that moment, our discomfort with honesty overrides connection — and unintentionally distorts reality for the other person.
Unintentional gaslighting can show up in many ways:
-
A friend trying to “cheer us up” but accidentally dismissing our feelings.
-
A parent offering “helpful advice” that subtly invalidates a child’s choices.
While there’s no ill intent, the impact can still leave the other person doubting themselves or feeling unseen. Over time, this pattern can deeply erode trust and damage relationships.
In this workshop, we’ll explore what unintentional gaslighting looks like, why it happens, and how we can respond differently. Through Authentic Relating games and principles, we’ll practice staying grounded in honesty, empathy, and curiosity — learning what to say instead to foster understanding and genuine connection.
